I stopped calling myself a writer and instead put the words “people connector” in my LinkedIn & social media bios, because that’s what I was doing the most. Seven years in, when an Instagram user error caused us to lose our account and our audience instantly (it’s me, I’m the user who errored! a story for another day!) I felt RELIEVED, thinking what better nudge could there be to quit this thing, take a step back, and focus on my writing?īut I felt too much pride to walk away from GirlCreative, so I tried to scale it, which became a second full time job. I stopped writing and spent my time building the brand while hoping, when we reach a certain level of clout I’ll have time to write - but I learned that with more notoriety comes more responsibility. As our organization grew to attract hundreds of attendees in person and thousands of followers online, I became the cheerleader known for connecting creative women, all while losing the connection to my own creativity.Īnd I found out the hard way that living like a lie is true will inform everything I do. Here comes the lie: I pretended for years to love leading GirlCreative the most, when what I truly longed to be doing was writing. I’ve loved writing all my life, no matter how many people are reading. Since then, I’ve written all over the internet (shoutout to Xanga!) to a handful of strangers and my mother and my friends. Maybe you’ve deleted every email I’ve sent! But I loved building a community that connected creative women.Īnother truth is that I’ve been writing on blogs since the turn of the century, when my middle school boyfriend bought me a URL to host my angsty teenage poetry. I’ve been showing up in your inbox since 2015, encouraging us all to band together over our inherent creativity.
